Limbaži Library Prepares to Mark Its 140th Anniversary
The Limbaži Municipality Main Library will hold an event on 17 October to mark its 140th anniversary. Research into its history has helped clarify several facts about its work.

The Main Library of Limbaži Municipality will hold a celebratory event on 17 October to mark the 140th anniversary of the Limbaži library. The anniversary was reported by «Auseklis», the regional newspaper published in Limbaži.
Many changes over the years
Over its long history the library has gone through numerous changes. Its ownership and premises have changed, as have its working hours, the ways books are lent out and its forms of activity. It has also worked under different political regimes.
Clarifying the record
In preparing for the anniversary, the author reviewed periodicals and other literature, documents held at the Valmiera zonal branch of the State Archive (part of the Latvian National Archives) and the collection of the Limbaži Museum. This made it possible to clarify some facts about the library's operations.
The source also notes that, from time to time, attempts were made in Limbaži to set up other libraries as well.
A historical photograph
The article is illustrated with a photograph from the Limbaži Museum collection, dating from the 1930s. It shows a group of Limbaži residents and was taken at K. Sarkangalvis's photo studio. Librarian Jānis Pētersons is second from the left, and Ādams Reimanis, director of Limbaži Secondary School, is fourth.
A fuller account of the library's history is available in «Auseklis» and its e-edition.
