Le Pen Defiantly Announces Presidential Run After Court Ruling

France woke up Wednesday in disbelief over the political turmoil unleashed by far-right leader Marine Le Pen. Within hours of a Paris appeals court confirming her guilty verdict for misusing public funds, she not only announced she would run in the upcoming presidential election but also launched a social media campaign.

Her poster features the French tricolor and a smiling Le Pen with arms outstretched, bearing the slogan "Pour la France" (For France). A French journalist joked that it resembled Kate Winslet on the Titanic, but Le Pen's campaign subheading, "La Renaissance" (Rebirth), suggests renewal.

Le Pen has long portrayed herself as a woman of the people, pitting "the People" against the "Metropolitan Elite" and "Globalists." Her main opponent is President Emmanuel Macron, whose party is also named Renaissance — a coincidence she likely exploits.

The appeals court shortened Le Pen's five-year ban on running for office, allowing her to campaign, but imposed a year of electronic tagging. Le Pen declared she would not wear the tag until France's highest court rules on her case, insisting that voters will decide who is right. Critics call her behavior Trumpian and a huge gamble.

Her legal team may hope the Court of Cassation acts slowly, potentially allowing her to become president before a ruling, granting her immunity. However, the court might expedite the case, forcing her to wear the tag during the campaign and reminding voters of her conviction.

Francois Ruffin, leader of the left-wing Debout! party, stated that Le Pen has been found guilty twice of embezzling €4.1 million, making her a criminal who should not run. Despite this, Le Pen remains strong in polls. She lost to Macron twice, but he cannot run for a third term.

France, as the EU's second-largest economy, a nuclear power, and a military heavyweight, matters globally. Le Pen and her protégé Jordan Bardella are Eurosceptics, skeptical of NATO, military aid to Ukraine, and increased defense spending — causing unease among European allies. Polls suggest Le Pen has a good chance of winning, though it is not certain.
