Two new productions have appeared in Latvian theatres, each engaging with significant figures from the country's history and culture.

Trilogy about investigator Rita Aksenoka

The Latvian National Theatre has staged "A Principled Stance," the second part of a trilogy centered on investigator Rita Aksenoka. The production features former politician Alfrēds Rubiks among its characters. The story is set during a period of dual governance in Latvia, when both the Latvian SSR prosecutor's office and the prosecutor's office of the already-restored Republic of Latvia operated simultaneously. At the same time, two competing political bodies coexisted — the Supreme Council and the All-Latvia Committee for Public Salvation. This period is remembered as one of the most complex chapters in Latvia's path to restored independence, when parallel power structures effectively functioned side by side.

A tribute to Imants Kalniņš

Meanwhile, the Mikhail Chekhov Riga Russian Theatre has presented a musical production directed by Rēzija Kalniņa. The piece was created as a personal tribute to her father, composer Imants Kalniņš, marking his 85th birthday. The production combines music and theatrical staging to honor one of Latvia's most prominent composers.

Both productions add to this season's theatre repertoire, offering audiences both a historical and a more personal perspective on figures and events significant to Latvia.
