Alfrēds Rubiks and the Three Musketeers — a look at Latvia's newest theatre productions
Latvian theatres have premiered new productions, including the second part of a trilogy about investigator Rita Aksenoka featuring Alfrēds Rubiks at the National Theatre, and a musical tribute to composer Imants Kalniņš at the Mikhail Chekhov Riga Russian Theatre.

Latvian theatres are presenting several new productions this autumn, spanning historical events and tributes to figures from the music world.
A trilogy about investigator Rita Aksenoka
At the Latvian National Theatre, audiences can now see the second installment of a trilogy dedicated to investigator Rita Aksenoka, titled "Principled Stance." The production is set during a period when Latvia experienced a dual power structure — both the Latvian SSR and the Republic of Latvia had their own prosecutor's offices operating simultaneously, while the country was governed by both the Supreme Council and the All-Latvia Committee for the Salvation of Society. Within this complex historical context, the production also features Alfrēds Rubiks, a figure closely tied to the events of this transitional period.
A tribute to composer Imants Kalniņš
Meanwhile, the Mikhail Chekhov Riga Russian Theatre is staging a new musical production directed by Rēzija Kalniņa. The show was created as a personal tribute to her father, composer Imants Kalniņš, marking his 85th birthday. The production combines a family connection with a celebration of the legacy of a significant Latvian composer.
Both productions reflect Latvian theatres' continued interest in both recent history and the country's national musical heritage, offering audiences different perspectives on past events and personalities.
