Russia's new Rassvet satellite system may be immune to Ukrainian jamming

For years, Ukraine's armed forces have been able to jam or completely switch off the communications systems used by Russian troops on the battlefield, hampering Moscow's ability to coordinate its forces at the front. However, a new Russian satellite system named Rassvet, sometimes compared to Elon Musk's SpaceX-built Starlink network, could become the first communications solution that Ukrainian forces are unable to neutralize using their existing methods.

According to reports, sanctions against the company behind Rassvet's development would not, on their own, be able to stop the system from operating. They could, however, make building each satellite slower and more expensive, thereby slowing the system's rollout and expansion.

The situation is described as urgent, with little time left to respond before Rassvet becomes a fully functioning communications infrastructure for the Russian military that is difficult to counter. If the system is fully deployed, it could significantly shift the balance of power in electronic warfare, an area where Ukraine has so far achieved notable success in disrupting Russian drone and other communications.

The question of how to effectively counter such a satellite system is becoming increasingly pressing, since traditional electronic warfare methods that have previously proven effective against Russian communications systems may not work as well against satellite-based solutions.
