Latvian comedian Džemma Sudraba is touring Latvia with a new monoplay, "Sieviete, saņemies!", which roughly translates as "Woman, Pull Yourself Together!". The show has a single performer on stage. In it she looks at society's expectations of women with humour and biting irony, and she invites audiences to laugh at the contradictory demands placed on them.
Contradictory standards
The show is about a woman's place in society, in relationships and under the standards she is supposedly expected to meet. Sudraba sums it up with an ironic line: a woman must be slim and beautiful, but not too much, because "a man doesn't sleep on bones". In her view, some women have to manage everything, while others are still learning to love themselves, get up at five in the morning and manifest a better life. If nothing works out, the conclusion on offer is that they must simply have received too little.
An interview on candid topics
The Latvian news portal TVNET has published an interview with the comedian. In it she talks about sex, feminism, ageing and relationships, as well as the courage to finally say "Enough!".
