Why sleep, exercise and diet matter for the brain: the answer lies in mitochondria
Neuroscientists say the age-old health advice to sleep well, exercise and eat properly may all serve one underlying purpose: keeping mitochondria, the cell's ancient energy producers, functioning well enough to power the brain. New research links mitochondrial health not just to physical wellbeing but to cognition, mood and stress resilience.

Sleep well, move regularly, eat properly — it's some of the oldest advice in medicine, but scientists are only now beginning to understand why these three habits matter so much for the brain specifically. Though the brain accounts for roughly 2% of body weight, it consumes about a fifth of the body's energy at rest, since every memory, decision or creative thought carries a metabolic cost.
An ancient cellular partnership
The source of that energy traces back more than two billion years, to when a primitive cell engulfed a bacterium that was never digested but instead formed a lasting partnership with its host. The descendants of that bacterium, mitochondria, now exist in nearly every cell of the body except mature red blood cells, converting the chemical energy in food into ATP, the molecule that powers almost all biological processes.
For decades mitochondria were seen in textbooks as simple, unremarkable cellular "powerhouses." Emerging evidence now suggests they play an active role in shaping intelligence, including arithmetic ability, processing speed, working memory, healthy brain ageing and resilience to stress.
Making sense of old advice
Exercise doesn't just build muscle — it enlarges the hippocampus, a brain region central to learning and memory, and prompts mitochondria to become more numerous and efficient. During sleep, the brain stays busy consolidating memories and repairing or replacing worn-out cellular components, including mitochondria, effectively performing maintenance ahead of the next day. Diet, meanwhile, supplies the raw materials mitochondria need: minimally processed food supports efficient energy conversion, while diets that overload the system appear to reduce that efficiency over time.
Scientists are now finding links between mitochondrial function and not only physical health but also stress resilience, mood and personality traits, further blurring the traditional divide between mind and body.
