Why many people quit running within the first month

Many people vow to start exercising and buy new shoes, fitness apps or gym memberships, only to abandon the plan after missing a single workout. The article looks at how this pattern unfolds.

The urge to take up sport is familiar to almost everyone — a promise made to oneself that "starting Monday" life will change. This resolution often begins with concrete purchases: new running shoes, a downloaded fitness app, or a paid monthly gym membership.

At first, things usually go well. In the initial days or weeks, the person keeps their promise, goes running or attends training sessions, and building a new habit feels genuinely achievable.

When the resolve starts to crack

Sooner or later, though, a moment arrives that threatens to derail the plan. It might be a rainy day when going outside feels unappealing, a difficult night with young children that leaves no energy, or an exhausting day at work after which there is neither the strength nor the desire to move.

Often a single missed workout is enough to plant doubt — a suspicion that exercise simply isn't something this person can manage after all. That one skipped session becomes confirmation of an inner belief that the goal was too ambitious or poorly suited to the person's actual life situation.

As a result, what began as an enthusiastic decision to change one's daily routine frequently ends, within the very first month, in complete abandonment. The new running shoes sit unused in the closet, the fitness app goes unopened, and the gym membership is used only a handful of times.

This pattern — a strong start, followed by one difficult moment, followed by total withdrawal — is a common experience among people trying to introduce exercise into their lives. Difficult circumstances such as bad weather, lack of sleep, or work-related exhaustion affect not just that particular day, but can become the reason someone gives up on the effort entirely.
