Heat and humidity persist despite scattered rain

The city of Kanpur, in India's Uttar Pradesh state, has experienced a mix of brief rain spells and persistent heat and humidity over the past several days, according to multiple Times of India reports. On Saturday, the maximum temperature reached 33.6°C. On Sunday, about 15.4 mm of rain fell, nudging the daytime high down slightly to 33°C, though high humidity pushed the "feels-like" temperature to around 39°C, with relative humidity ranging between 63% and 87%.

By Monday, rain was limited to scattered pockets, mainly in South Kanpur, while the maximum temperature climbed to 34.2°C — 0.6°C higher than Sunday. The feels-like temperature was around 37°C, with humidity still at 87%. Tuesday was a dry day with no rainfall recorded: the mercury rose further to 34.4°C, 0.2°C above Monday's high, while the previous night's low was 24.8°C. Bright sunshine and light northeasterly winds of 1.8–5.1 km/h did little to ease the discomfort, with the feels-like temperature around 36°C.

CSA weather expert S N Sunil Pandey said that although the southwest monsoon shows signs of withdrawing, cloud movement over the following three days could bring localized thunderstorms with gusty winds and light rain or drizzle, adding that intense humidity would return whenever the sun reappeared.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast partly cloudy conditions for the following 24 hours, with a mix of sun and cloud and a chance of scattered thunderstorms. The maximum temperature was expected to hover around 34°C, with lows between 26°C and 27°C.

According to Sunday's report, Kanpur Nagar's Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at about 127, rated "unhealthy for sensitive groups," with PM2.5 (28.2) and PM10 (29.8) as the main pollutants. Health authorities advised children, the elderly and people with respiratory conditions such as asthma to limit prolonged outdoor exertion.

Deep depression threatens Andhra Pradesh coast

Separately, according to another report, coastal Andhra Pradesh was bracing for moderate to heavy rain on Wednesday as a deep depression approached from the Bay of Bengal. Authorities closed schools and Anganwadi centers in six districts — Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Parvathipuram Manyam, Visakhapatnam, Alluri Sitharama Raju and Anakapalle — cancelled government employees' leave, and deployed State Disaster Response Force teams to vulnerable areas. The depression was centered about 100 km southeast of Kalingapatnam and moving northwestward at 7 km/h, and was expected to cross the coast near Kalingapatnam by Wednesday night, with gusts of up to 75 km/h possible along the coast.
