A court in Russia's Kaliningrad region has handed down a lengthy prison sentence to a Lithuanian citizen convicted of espionage. Russia's Interfax news agency reported on Wednesday that the court had imposed a sentence of 13.5 years in prison.
According to the report, the accused was found guilty of engaging in espionage activities over a period of roughly 13 years. The sentence is to be served in a maximum-security penal colony. Russian authorities have not disclosed the person's identity.
The court found that the Lithuanian citizen had collected and transmitted information classified as a state secret while present in Russia from 2011 to 2024. During the investigation, law enforcement confiscated the individual's mobile phone and what was described as specialized equipment allegedly used for espionage.
The case adds to the backdrop of heightened tensions between Russia and Baltic states, although the court and Russian media have provided few details about the proceedings. The Lithuanian side has not yet officially commented on the verdict.
