Vint Cerf, Google's chief internet evangelist, will retire next week, ending one of the most influential careers in technology history. The 83-year-old, along with Robert Kahn, is credited with designing the TCP/IP protocols that underpin the internet. Cerf joined Google in 2005 as a vice president and chief internet evangelist.

The announcement was made at the Open Frontier conference hosted by the Laude Institute. Dave Patterson, a UC Berkeley professor known for co-developing RISC architecture, revealed Cerf's retirement after more than 20 years at Google. Google did not comment officially.

Cerf participated in a panel with other open-source project creators, discussing the challenges of centralized AI models versus the decentralized open internet. He predicted that the rise of AI agents—autonomous software that coordinates with other software—will push companies back toward standardized protocols for interoperability.

Cerf argued that natural language is too ambiguous for agent-to-agent communication, comparing it to the telephone game where messages get distorted. He emphasized the need for formal standards to ensure agents precisely understand each other's commitments.

Patterson recalled meeting Cerf in the 1970s, noting he was always the best-dressed computer scientist, wearing suits and ties. Cerf admitted he deliberately dressed differently to stand out among peers.
