Google has started rolling out its new agentic AI assistant, Gemini Spark, within the Gemini app for macOS. The company first unveiled Spark at its I/O developer conference in May, describing it as a tool that transforms Gemini into an "active partner" capable of performing tasks on behalf of the user.

On Mac computers, users can ask Spark to organize a large number of PDF files from the Downloads folder into specific folders. It can also perform tasks within Google Workspace apps using files stored on the computer, such as creating a spreadsheet from invoices saved on the laptop.

In the future, Google plans to update Spark so it can execute tasks on the computer based on commands given from a phone. For example, if a user is away and needs a specific file, Spark could locate it on the laptop and email it.

All these tasks require users to trust Gemini with their data. Google states that the assistant will only access files the user explicitly permits. Users who are comfortable granting broader access can link Spark with Google Tasks and Keep. Integration with third-party apps like Canva, Dropbox, Instacart, OpenTable, and Zillow Rental will become available over the coming weeks.

Currently, Gemini Spark for macOS is in beta testing and available only to users in the US who are 18 or older and subscribe to Google AI Ultra for $100 per month.
