Cranberry harvest thrives in Estonia's bogs as pickers chase extra winter income
Estonia's bogs are yielding an abundant cranberry harvest this year, drawing both hobbyists and pickers hoping to earn extra money for winter. More sellers are now bypassing collection points to sell directly on social media.

Estonia's bogs are brimming with cranberries this year, drawing crowds of pickers — some out for a hobby, others hoping to earn extra cash. Even at the remote Emajõe-Suursoo bog, pickers report plenty of company gathering the large red berries.
Most reach the bog by boat across Lake Peipus. Tauno Laasik, initiator of the Peipsi Toit regional food network, explained that boats make the work far easier: carrying large hauls of cranberries out of the bog on foot is difficult, but a boat lets pickers simply load sacks near the water's edge and haul them away. Picker Jekaterina noted that arriving by boat cuts the distance significantly compared to walking nearly two kilometers across the bog on foot.
Laasik said that while many pick cranberries purely as a hobby, the bog's edge also attracts serious, experienced pickers who can gather up to 100 liters in a single day. They then sell their harvest to buyers, earning a solid supplementary income heading into winter.
Kristel Vilbaste, who has researched cranberries for years, said more pickers are now choosing to sell berries directly through social media rather than through traditional collection points. She cautioned that advertised prices range between €6 and €10, but some buyers fail to notice the price is quoted per liter rather than per kilogram — meaning €6 per liter works out to nearly €10 per kilogram, so buyers should check listings carefully.
Vilbaste added that this year's berries are especially juicy and flavorful thanks to heavy rainfall combined with ample sunshine. Because the bogs are holding unusually high water levels this season, she recommends wearing tall rubber boots — and not forgetting a reflector, since picking often stretches into the dark.
