Cost of keeping one inmate in Latvia reached 62 euros per day last year

In 2025, maintaining one prisoner in Latvia cost an average of 62.08 euros per day, up 8.3% from the previous year. At the end of the year, the country's prisons held 3,588 inmates.

According to data compiled by Latvia's Prison Administration, the cost of maintaining a single inmate averaged 62.08 euros per day last year. That marks an increase of 4.76 euros, or 8.3%, compared with 2024.

The rise is even more pronounced when measured against 2021: over that period, daily maintenance costs per inmate climbed by 11.95 euros, or 23.8%.

At the end of last year, Latvia's prisons held a total of 3,588 inmates. The figures reflect a broader trend of steadily rising costs for housing each person in custody in recent years.
