Google has introduced its latest frontier AI model, called Gemini 4 Argon. The announcement came from Koray Kavukcuoglu, chief AI architect and SVP at Google DeepMind, who described the model as delivering strong performance across complex workflows, including real-world software engineering, enterprise knowledge work such as legal and finance tasks, and cybersecurity defense.

Restricted rollout

Despite its capabilities, Google is initially limiting access to Gemini 4 Argon to a select group of "trusted cyber defenders." Kavukcuoglu noted that the company is actively participating in the U.S. government's voluntary process for pre-release model access, while gradually expanding the pool of users. Before a wider rollout, Google intends to strengthen safeguards, including defenses against misuse and prompt injection attacks, as well as monitoring for potential model misalignment.

Already in internal use

According to Kavukcuoglu, Gemini 4 Argon is already powering Google's internal workflows, including assisting with large-scale codebase migrations. Google also released a benchmark chart showing the new model outperforming competing models from OpenAI and Anthropic in several areas. Notably, apparent leaked benchmarks for the model had already been circulating among the AI community on social media earlier in the week.

Amid rising competition

The Gemini 4 Argon launch comes just one day after OpenAI's DevDay conference, where the company unveiled its Dots AI agent and the GPT-6.1 Sol model. OpenAI also announced this week that it would not release a previously planned GPT-6.1 Astra model, citing safety concerns. The release also follows closely on Kavukcuoglu's appointment as the new head of DeepMind in August.
