Gallery Cut Art opens new Roberts Bāliņš exhibition on longing and fire

Gallery Cut Art is now showing a new solo exhibition by artist Roberts Bāliņš titled "Longing as Culmination." The show is featured among a roundup of five notable August art events and brings together roughly 20 new works by the artist.

A familiar form, further explored

Bāliņš has long been known for distinctive tubular forms that can be read either as pure abstraction or as vaguely human-like shapes. In this new exhibition, that formal language is pushed further, ranging from small-scale objects to towering constructions nearly three meters tall.

Trading color for monochrome

Unlike his earlier exhibitions, which leaned heavily on color, this show takes a strikingly austere, monochrome approach. The works combine the shine of stainless steel, gray tones of aluminum, and contrasting black volumes. This restrained palette makes it easier for viewers to focus on each figure's line, scale, and unusual, almost bodily quality — details that could previously be overshadowed by color.

Where the exhibition begins

The show's starting point is a piece called "Eternal Flames," a sculpture depicting fire that never builds toward any climax — the flames simply burn, without striving for a peak. The idea echoes the exhibition's title and its underlying theme of longing.
