Forlan appointed interim Uruguay coach
Former Manchester United striker Diego Forlan has been named interim head coach of Uruguay's national football team. He will take charge of autumn friendlies while also leading the country's U20 side.
Diego Forlan, a former Manchester United striker, has been appointed interim head coach of Uruguay's national football team. The decision comes after Marcelo Bielsa stepped down from the position following the team's performance at the most recent World Cup.
Uruguay failed to advance past the group stage of that tournament. They lost to Spain and drew against Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde, which was not enough to secure a spot in the knockout rounds. Bielsa then left his role as head coach.
Forlan will take charge of the senior team for friendly matches scheduled for this autumn. It has not yet been announced whether he will be considered for the position on a permanent basis. In addition to his duties with the senior squad, Forlan will also serve as head coach of Uruguay's U20 national team.
Forlan is a well-known figure in Uruguayan football. During his international career, he earned 112 caps and scored 36 goals. He notably won the Golden Ball award at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, where Uruguay reached the semi-finals.
At club level, the former forward played for several prominent European clubs, including Manchester United, Atletico Madrid and Villarreal. Forlan ended his international career in 2015 and retired from professional football altogether in 2018.
