NHL club Toronto Maple Leafs general manager John Chayka recently commented on the team's goaltending situation, stating that the club already has three goaltenders he considers good. In his remarks, he did not mention Latvian player Elvis Merzlikins, whose name has recently been linked with a possible move to Toronto.
The fact that the club's management, when discussing the goaltending position, made no reference to Merzlikins is seen as a sign that the Latvian's chances of making the Toronto roster are currently not strong. If management believes the team already has enough capable goaltenders, there may simply be no room for a fourth player in that position.
Elvis Merzlikins is one of the best-known Latvian players in the NHL, and news about his possible club change or future in the league is followed with great interest in Latvia. It is not yet known whether or when any concrete changes to the goaltending situation might occur.
Chayka's comments nonetheless suggest there is currently little basis for optimism about Merzlikins potentially joining the Toronto Maple Leafs, as club management appears to be focused on other goaltenders.
