Fiscal Discipline Council warns hospital network reform violates legal requirements

The Fiscal Discipline Council (FDP) has addressed Latvia's highest state officials over concerns about the compliance of the hospital network reform with fiscal rules. The council sent a letter to Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs (AS), Finance Minister Māris Kučinskis (AS), and Saeima Budget and Finance (Tax) Committee Chair Aiva Vīksna (AS).
According to the FDP, the government's July 28 decision on the hospital network reform does not meet the requirements of the Fiscal Discipline Law. The council also points out that the decision fails to ensure compensation for the growth in expenditure, a key precondition for the reform to fit within the country's fiscal discipline framework.
The council's letter indicates that the reform may require additional clarification regarding its financial impact and alignment with state budget policy principles. The further course of action will depend on how the government and the Saeima respond to these objections.
