Armed escorts of illegal migrants threatened Latvian soldiers at border, minister says
Latvia's Interior Minister Jānis Dombrava reported an unusually aggressive provocation at the Latvia-Belarus border, where armed escorts of migrants threatened National Armed Forces soldiers. Hours later, masked individuals crossed into Latvian territory and damaged property.

Latvia's Interior Minister Jānis Dombrava has shared details on social media about a particularly aggressive incident at the border with Belarus. According to the minister, soldiers of the National Armed Forces prevented 20 illegal migrants from attempting to cross into Latvia unlawfully.
Unlike previous incidents, this provocation stood out for its demonstrative and aggressive nature. Dombrava stated that the individuals escorting the migrant group, who remained on the Belarusian side, were armed and issued threats against Latvian soldiers. These escorts also actively pushed and directed the migrant group toward the Latvian border.
Property damaged, equipment stolen
The minister further reported that several hours after the confrontation, masked individuals entered Latvian territory. They damaged an electrical distribution cabinet and stole surveillance cameras before retreating back into Belarusian territory, managing to leave before a border guard patrol arrived at the scene.
Dombrava warned that such actions could lead to more serious consequences for Belarus itself.
The minister's social media post drew a strong public reaction, with many commenters calling for tougher measures to prevent migrants from entering Latvia and criticizing the apparent ease with which the border infrastructure was accessed and damaged.
