FBI Investigating Rogue Wi-Fi Network Found on Delta Flight, DEF CON Attendees Suspected
An unauthorized Wi-Fi network briefly appeared aboard Delta Flight 591, prompting an FBI investigation, with suspicion falling on attendees of the DEF CON hacker conference. Delta says flight safety was never affected.

Delta Air Lines has confirmed that an initial finding from an inquiry into Flight 591 revealed an unauthorized Wi-Fi network operating onboard for a short period during the flight. The network was not provided, operated, or supplied by Delta, spokesperson Morgan Durrant told Ars Technica in an emailed statement.
The airline stressed that the flight's safety was never in question and that no aircraft operating systems were affected. No emergency was declared during the flight. As a precaution, however, the plane's legitimate onboard Wi-Fi service was disabled for 30 minutes.
Timing raises suspicion
The incident's timing coincides with DEF CON, one of the world's largest hacker and cybersecurity conferences, which draws thousands of attendees to the same region each year. That overlap is fueling speculation that whoever set up the rogue network may have been a conference attendee traveling on the flight.
Law enforcement response
The Atlanta Police Department referred all inquiries about the incident to the FBI. The bureau's Atlanta field office confirmed it is looking into the matter, though officials said no arrests have been made and that FBI agents did not meet the aircraft at the gate upon arrival.
"FBI Atlanta is aware of reports regarding a potential Wi-Fi-related incident involving Delta Flight 591," spokesperson Tony Thomas said in a statement emailed to Ars Technica. He added that the bureau is in contact with local and corporate partners on the matter but had no additional information to share at this time.
The episode highlights the persistent risk of so-called "evil twin" Wi-Fi networks, in which malicious hotspots mimic legitimate ones to lure unsuspecting users and potentially intercept their data.
