Why the Mac mini costs less than a MacBook

Apple's base Mac mini starts at $900 with the powerful new M6 chip, but it still undercuts the MacBook Air mainly because it ships without a screen, battery or input devices.

The entry-level Mac mini costs $900 and comes with Apple's new M6 chip, which is more than enough power for most people — everyday apps like browsers or video players barely tap into what it can do. Its one real shortcoming is the base 256GB of storage, which can fill up quickly for anyone syncing photo and video libraries.

A cheaper MacBook does exist in the Neo, but it comes with real trade-offs: just 8GB of RAM and the same A18 Pro chip found in the iPhone 16 Pro. Stepping up to the MacBook Air brings the price to around $1,100, yet it still only offers an M5 chip and 16GB of RAM. A MacBook Pro sits in an entirely different price bracket.

Why the mini is cheaper

The biggest factor is the missing display. Replacing a MacBook screen without AppleCare can run several hundred dollars, since Apple has to account for the panel, frame, hinge and cabling. The mini also skips the built-in Center Stage camera and ships with no keyboard, mouse or trackpad, even though it actually has more ports than the Neo or Air — eight versus three. There's no battery either, and Apple typically charges $150 to $250 for battery service including labor. On top of that, laptops have to be thin, drop-resistant and power-efficient, which drives up manufacturing costs, while the mini relies on a simple cooling design built around a large circular vent on its base.

Which one makes sense

For anyone new to the Mac ecosystem who doesn't need a big screen, the MacBook Air is usually the better value, since it already includes a display, keyboard and trackpad. The mini suits people who already own a monitor and peripherals, or who want to hook a computer up to a TV — it even offers more Thunderbolt and USB-C ports than the laptops do. The mini also scales further: a maxed-out configuration with an M5 Pro chip, 64GB of RAM, 8TB of storage and 10 Gbps Ethernet costs $6,800, while dropping to 512GB brings that down to $3,000 — around the same price as a Mac Studio, which starts at $2,500 with an M5 Max chip and 36GB of RAM.
