Fan-made VR mod puts you inside Mario Kart 64's tracks
Developer RaYRoD TV has released a free VR mod for the 1997 classic Mario Kart 64 that places players in a first-person, head-tracked view. The mod, built on the existing SpaghettiKart PC port, is available on GitHub.
A developer known as RaYRoD TV has created a virtual reality mod for Mario Kart 64, the 1997 racing game, allowing players to experience it from a first-person, head-tracked perspective instead of the original's third-person camera.
The mod was spotted by X user BeardoBenjo, who shared a clip showing the Koopa Troopa Beach track, including a run through its tunnel shortcut. The footage shows how the first-person view creates a much stronger sense of speed than the game's original perspective, making it feel as though the player is racing headfirst down the track rather than sitting in a kart.
Built on an existing PC port
The mod is based on SpaghettiKart, an existing PC port of Mario Kart 64. To use it, players need their own copy of the game's ROM, either dumped from a physical cartridge or otherwise obtained. The mod itself is free and available for download on GitHub.
Beyond the first-person view, the mod adds a VR options menu that lets users adjust stereo depth, eye height, and the placement of the game's on-screen HUD elements.
RaYRoD TV has previously released similar VR mods for other classic titles, including Banjo-Kazooie and Star Fox 64.
Nintendo itself has shown little interest in virtual reality over the years, with its efforts largely limited to the Virtual Boy console and a one-off Nintendo Labo VR kit. For those with a VR headset and nostalgia for the Nintendo 64 era, the mod offers a new way to revisit the classic game — though given the intense sense of speed, it's advisable not to play on a full stomach.
