Congo's Ebola outbreak surpasses 6,000 confirmed cases

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), caused by the Bundibugyo strain, continues to worsen. Government figures show confirmed cases have topped 6,000, with the death toll reaching 2,911. The virus has now spread to around 60 health zones across six provinces, with new areas being added weekly.

DW correspondent Jonas Gerding, reporting from Bunia, the capital of Ituri province and epicenter of the outbreak, described a recurring pattern: initial denial and resistance from communities, followed by gradual acceptance. He warned that many more deaths are likely before the outbreak is brought under control.

The situation is especially difficult in eastern Congo, where ongoing conflict and insecurity hinder response teams' access to affected communities. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called it the fastest-growing Ebola epidemic on record, noting that its spread is outpacing containment efforts. He appealed for greater international funding and attention, warning that the world must also confront a "virus of indifference."

Vaccination campaign expands

Although the available vaccine was originally developed for a different Ebola variant, Congolese Health Minister Samuel Roger Kamba said more than 50,000 doses have already arrived in the country. Vaccination is being prioritized for front-line health workers, expanding in a ring around Ituri province. Some health workers and residents expressed willingness to be vaccinated, while others raised concerns about whether supplies are sufficient and called for children to be included.

Violence and economic fallout

Ebola response teams have reported being attacked while carrying out their duties, including during safe burial operations in Ituri province. Meanwhile, the outbreak is deepening economic hardship — schools have reopened in Bukavu and Bunia, but many families cannot afford supplies, and local businesses report sharply reduced sales as households prioritize food. The government has proposed radio-based distance learning, though teachers say many areas lack the necessary infrastructure. Despite the challenges, more than 1,360 people have recovered from Ebola, offering some hope that the outbreak can eventually be controlled.
