Germany officially blames Russia for cargo plane incident, announces closures and sanctions
Four weeks after an incident involving a Ukrainian cargo plane at Leipzig/Halle airport, Germany has formally pointed to Russian intelligence. Berlin will close Russia’s consulate general in Bonn, shut down the Russian House in Berlin and push for new EU sanctions.
Germany’s government has formally blamed Russia for an attack on a Ukrainian cargo plane that took place four weeks ago at Leipzig/Halle airport. Based on information gathered by police, intelligence services and international partners, officials said a Russian intelligence service was responsible for the bomb threat.
Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt and Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul announced that Germany would close Russia’s consulate general in Bonn, shut down the Russian House in Berlin and support new sanctions at the European Union level. They described the measures as part of a firm response to the incident.
On the same day, an electricity substation in Brandenburg was attacked, reportedly with homemade rockets. The development highlighted concerns about the vulnerability of Germany’s critical infrastructure, as airports and power facilities now appear to be among the targets.
In an interview on the Berlin Playbook podcast, King’s College London researcher Peter Neumann assessed whether Berlin’s reaction truly amounts to the “consistent response” promised by Wadephul. He also discussed how exposed Germany is when both aviation hubs and energy infrastructure can be hit.
