Dombrava: Bringing in foreign workers may harm Latvia's economy more than help it

Interior Minister Jānis Dombrava warned on the show "Naudas cena" that large-scale recruitment of foreign labor could push wages down and burden the social budget rather than boost Latvia's economic growth.

The debate over recruiting foreign labor for Latvia has resurfaced, with some employers citing worker shortages in certain sectors while others warn that looking abroad for solutions could cause more harm than good.

Speaking on TV24's program "Naudas cena," Interior Minister Jānis Dombrava, a National Alliance representative running for a seat in the 15th Saeima, argued that economic growth is not directly tied to a country's population size. He pointed out that many countries with smaller populations than Latvia have more developed economies.

Productivity matters more than headcount

According to the minister, the real drivers of economic growth are business productivity, operational efficiency, and the ability of companies to create high-value-added products — not simply an influx of additional workers from abroad.

Concerns over the social budget

Dombrava also raised concerns that large-scale recruitment of foreign labor could hurt the wellbeing of local residents by driving wages down and making living conditions harder. He suggested that some of these workers eventually end up relying on the social budget, creating an additional burden on the state's social system and society as a whole.

The minister concluded that broad recruitment of foreign labor is not a sustainable path for the country's economic development, saying it is more likely to lead to economic stagnation than growth.
