Two members of the Saeima, Latvia's parliament, from the governing coalition have submitted proposals that would establish in law that the news services of Latvian Television (LTV) and Latvian Radio operate independently of each other. The proposals have been passed to the Saeima's Human Rights and Public Affairs Committee.
The amendments concern the Law on Public Electronic Mass Media and Their Management. The deputies prepared them for the second, final reading, which means the bill is at the last stage of parliamentary consideration.
What the proposal says
The proposal would require the news services of both public broadcasters to be organisationally and editorially autonomous. The initial report does not give further details of the proposed provisions.
The committee must still review the proposals before the amendments can go to a final vote in a Saeima plenary session.
