Bear monitoring is an investment in resident safety, says Latvian nature authority

Baiba Ralle, a representative of Latvia's Nature Conservation Agency (DAP), has told the LETA news agency that monitoring bears should be seen as an investment in the safety of local residents and in resolving potential conflict situations. In her view, regular monitoring makes it possible to follow the situation and act in time, before problems arise between people and wild animals.

Ralle pointed out that continuous observation of bears provides an opportunity to assess risks and develop appropriate solutions to protect residents. Monitoring also helps to understand how bears move and how their occasional encounters with humans can be reduced. According to the DAP representative, such an approach is important not only for nature conservation, but also for public safety.

She stressed that investing in monitoring pays off because preventing conflicts in advance is more effective than reacting after incidents have already occurred. The DAP therefore encourages treating bear monitoring as a preventive measure that benefits both people and wildlife. Overall, Ralle's comments show that the nature conservation agency sees significant value in observing the bear population.
