Latvia's official €619 monthly spending figure sparks online skepticism
New Central Statistical Bureau data shows Latvian households spent an average of €619 per person monthly last year, but many on social media doubt the figure reflects real life.

Latvia's Central Statistical Bureau (CSP) has released new data on household consumption spending, prompting widespread discussion on social media. According to the figures, average monthly spending per household member last year reached 619 euros. Food accounted for the largest share at 24%, followed by housing utility payments at 16% and transport at 12%.
The statistics office noted that over the past six years, total household budget spending has grown by 196 euros, or 46%, driven mainly by rising consumer prices.
Regional differences
The data reveal significant disparities across Latvia's regions. The Riga region recorded the highest spending last year, averaging 750 euros per person monthly, while in the city of Riga itself the figure reached as high as 781 euros. Kurzeme households spent an average of 546 euros, Vidzeme 519 euros, and Zemgale 511 euros, while Latgale recorded the lowest figure at 446 euros per month.
Social media users express doubt
The published figures generated considerable reaction in comments, with many users claiming their actual daily expenses far exceed the official average. Several commenters said their utility payments alone amount to roughly half of the stated 619 euros, not counting mortgage payments and other regular expenses.
People also shared specific examples of where their money goes — groceries, unexpected car repairs, and purchases of new devices. Some users joked that they spend the stated amount in a single day, while another commenter said her monthly costs for rent, food and other daily needs reach around 1,200 euros, leaving nothing left over.
The online discussion has largely centered on whether the official average truly reflects people's everyday reality, or whether it diverges significantly from actual living costs in Latvia.
