Bulgaria says drone that exploded near gas network was a stray Ukrainian decoy

Bulgaria's defense ministry has concluded that a drone which recently exploded near the country's gas transmission network most likely belonged to Ukraine and was being used as a decoy in wartime operations. According to the ministry's assessment, the device drifted off its planned flight path and ended up detonating on Bulgarian territory.

The purpose of decoy drones

Decoy drones are typically deployed to divert an adversary's air defense systems away from real targets, or to deplete air defense resources by forcing responses to non-threatening aircraft. Their flight paths, however, are not always fully controllable, and in some cases they end up crossing into the territory of neighboring states that are not formal parties to the conflict.
