Britain's Lyles-less duo Gleave and Azu sweep 100m at European Championships
At the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, British sprinters Romell Gleave and Jeremiah Azu took gold and silver in the men's 100m, after top favourite Marcell Jacobs of Italy withdrew injured.
The men's 100m final at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham on Tuesday brought a one-two finish for Great Britain. Jamaican-born Romell Gleave crossed the line in 10.09 seconds to win gold, improving on the bronze he took at the same event in Rome two years ago. His compatriot Jeremiah Azu finished second in 10.16 seconds. Germany's Owen Ansah took bronze with a time of 10.19 seconds.
The race was marked by an injury to Italy's Lamont Marcell Jacobs, who had been considered the main favourite heading into the final. Jacobs, the winner of the 100m at the previous two European Championships, sustained the injury in the first half of the race and was unable to finish competitively.
Latvian athletes to join competition later in the week
No Latvian athletes competed on Tuesday. Starting Thursday, seven Latvian track and field athletes will take part in the championships. Anete Sietiņa, Patriks Gailums and Krišjānis Suntažs will compete in the javelin throw, Valters Kreišs in pole vault, and Oskars Grava in the 200m sprint. In race walking, Raivo Saulgriezis will compete in the marathon distance and Modra Liepiņa in the half-marathon.
The Latvian delegation also includes coaches Gints Palameiks, Mareks Ārents, Viktors Lācis, Ilmārs Saulgriezis, Andis Anškins and Modris Liepiņš, along with physiotherapist Toms Zvonkovs. The European Championships in Birmingham will conclude on Sunday.
