BMW has revealed the new electric iX4, a coupe-styled SUV that is a sportier take on the iX3. It is the third vehicle on the company's next-generation Neue Klasse platform, after the iX3 and i3.

The iX4 50 xDrive arrives first, in March 2027, with the higher-performance M60 xDrive following later that year. The automaker sees the lineup as its answer to the surge of Chinese imports that has hit other European brands hard. The Verge notes that the iX4 can compete on range and technology, but it is unclear whether BMW can match China on affordability.

Battery and charging

The iX4 50 xDrive starts at $66,200, excluding destination and handling fees. It uses a sixth-generation high-voltage battery with 112.2 kWh of usable energy. Based on EPA estimates, range reaches up to 428 miles, more than the Tesla Model Y.

Thanks to an 800-volt architecture, the car can accept DC fast charging at up to 400 kW. Ten minutes adds up to 184 miles of range, and a 10–80 percent charge takes 21 minutes. With a NACS port, the iX4 works with more than 80,000 Tesla Supercharger connectors worldwide.

Performance

Both versions have dual motors. The 50 xDrive produces 463 horsepower and 475 lb-ft of torque, reaching 60 mph in 4.7 seconds. The M60 xDrive delivers 603 horsepower and 645 lb-ft, and its 0–60 time is a full second quicker.

The rear-axle motor is an electrically excited synchronous design that uses no permanent magnets. BMW says it cuts drive-system energy losses by 40 percent and weight by 10 percent.

Technology

The cabin features the Panoramic iDrive system, with a 17.9-inch central touchscreen and a projection across the lower windshield. The iX4 supports bidirectional charging, an intelligent charging flap and Plug & Charge. Its driver assistance allows hands-free highway driving, but point-to-point assisted driving will not arrive until 2027 at the earliest.
