Youth Hockey Game in Jelgava Ends in Parent Confrontation, Police Called In
A Latvian youth championship U11 hockey match in Jelgava between Tukums and Hockey Planet turned into a clash between parents that required municipal police involvement, and the Latvian Hockey Federation has already issued penalties.

A Latvian youth championship U11 match in Jelgava between the Tukums and Hockey Planet teams turned into a serious confrontation between parents from both sides. Video released by LTV shows several parents of Hockey Planet players running onto the ice during the game. The dispute continued after the final whistle, moving outside the playing area.
Tukums team representative Jānis Grands says that while trying to stop parents from reaching the referee, he was attacked by several people and received threats. Municipal police had to get involved in the incident.
A different account from the other side
Parents on the Hockey Planet side describe events differently. They say the video clips circulating online are taken out of context and that the opposing team's children behaved overly aggressively during the game. Ivars Mēkons told LTV that parents went onto the ice because one child had been lying there for an extended period. He argued that being responsible for a minor child compels a parent to act, and urged people to judge the full footage rather than isolated clips.
Federation's response
Latvian Hockey Federation Secretary General Roberts Pļāvējs confirmed that the federation's disciplinary committee has already reviewed the incident. Penalties have been issued both for the children's on-ice conduct and for clubs and parents over violations committed during the game. The federation warned that if similar incidents recur, spectators could be barred from arenas for the teams involved.
The federation acknowledged that parental emotions boiling over at children's hockey games is not a new problem and said it plans a public awareness campaign on the issue. Both sides have since taken formal action — Grands filed a report with police, while Mēkons submitted a complaint to the Latvian Hockey Federation.
