Berlin AI summit sees calls for EU to tighten rules on frontier AI models

European lawmakers this week argued that the European Union's artificial intelligence regulations should hold American technology companies liable for the risks posed by their most advanced, or "frontier," AI models. The discussion took place around WELT's AI Summit in Berlin, which brought together AI and technology industry leaders from across Europe along with other interested parties.
Among the summit's participants was Cardinal Michael Czerny, whom Pope Leo recently appointed to chair the Vatican's Commission on AI. He stressed that European politicians need to take seriously the warnings surrounding the development of frontier AI models and should enter into dialogue with the Catholic Church on the matter.
Broader regulatory debate
Wider questions of AI regulation were also explored at the summit with Axel Voss, a member of the European Parliament's Committee on Legal Affairs, taking part in the discussions. POLITICO's senior technology reporter Pieter Haeck also contributed to the conversation.
A central question raised was how much real influence Europe can exert over the global trajectory of AI development at a time when the field is dominated by the United States and China.
