The Balvi municipal government has begun reconstructing two street sections in the town — Daugavpils Street and Ziedu Street — with total spending set to exceed €1.8 million.

According to the municipality, the investment is needed to support the operation and growth of businesses located along these streets. This suggests the infrastructure upgrade is being framed as a way to strengthen the local economy in that part of town.

Questions over the selection

However, not all residents and business owners in the municipality find the choice of streets sufficiently justified. Some have raised questions about why these two particular street sections were selected as priority projects to receive such a significant amount of municipal funding.

The debate reflects a broader issue common to municipal infrastructure projects — how priorities are set when limited budget resources must be divided among various local needs and objects across the municipality.
