Liene Brūna, a Latvian born and raised in Australia, has been living in Latvia for three years after relocating in search of her identity and roots. She shared her experience on the Latvian Radio programme "Monopols".

Having grown up between two cultures, Brūna spent a long time trying to understand what it meant to be Latvian and what it meant to be Australian, and how to reconcile the two. This inner search eventually led her to move to Latvia, the country of her ancestors, to get to know it more closely.

Connecting with the diaspora

In her search for answers about her sense of belonging, Brūna had the opportunity to meet Latvians living in various countries around the world. This experience helped her understand how differently Latvian identity can be expressed outside Latvia, and how members of the diaspora each maintain their connection to their roots in their own way.

Brūna now shares the insights she has gained about identity and belonging with others, hoping her story can be useful to those grappling with similar questions about their origins and their connection to two cultures.
