Young Latvians abroad: first experience brings new appreciation for homeland
Young Latvians who move abroad often, after their first time away, begin to realize anew what matters to them about Latvia. Many reflect on what from their foreign experience they could bring back home.

Living outside Latvia does not always mean young people grow distant from their homeland — often the opposite happens.
The first time a young person leaves Latvia to live or study elsewhere tends to trigger reflection on what truly connects them to home and what they genuinely value about Latvia. Removed from their familiar environment, many start noticing and consciously weighing habits, values, and everyday details that previously seemed self-evident.
From appreciating the familiar to new experience
Living in another country gives young people a chance to compare different lifestyles and social norms. This experience often prompts them to think about which things they've discovered in their new environment would be worth bringing back to life in Latvia, whether upon return or simply by sharing the experience with family at home.
Time spent abroad also lets young people see more clearly what they actually miss about Latvia — from familiar tastes and everyday comforts to deeper values that shape their sense of belonging to the homeland.
This kind of experience suggests that emigration or temporary life abroad can serve young people not only as a chance to get to know the world, but also as a way to strengthen and redefine their connection to Latvia.
