"Awakening Before the Awakening": How Young Artists Saved the Vāne Church in 1983

This year's European Heritage Days are dedicated to the theme of "threat," examined in several contexts — from monuments endangered today to those that survived difficult times in the past and carried their story through like a bright torch.

One such example is the Vāne Evangelical Lutheran Church, built in 1663, which forms part of Latvia's sacred heritage. The church was once loudly and diligently saved by the creative youth of the time, among whom were people who later became well-known musicians, actors, poets, writers, architects, artists and other like-minded individuals.

A rescue with Soviet "blessing"

Although the rescue of the church took place with the "blessing" of the Komsomol and the local kolkhoz, the process that began in 1983 was in fact a genuine forerunner of the Awakening — evidence that interest in preserving national heritage was already forming in society well before the official start of the Awakening later in the 1980s.

The story of the Vāne church is presented as an example of how sacred heritage can survive even the most difficult historical circumstances, when there are people willing to defend and preserve it for future generations.
