Arsenal complete £75m signing of Guimaraes from Newcastle

Arsenal have reached agreement with Newcastle United to sign Bruno Guimaraes for a fee of £75m. The Brazil midfielder, who had captained Newcastle, made clear earlier this summer that he wanted to move to the Premier League champions.

The 28-year-old has signed a four-year contract that includes the option of an additional twelve months. He described leaving Newcastle as one of the toughest decisions of his life, saying the club meant a great deal to him, but explained he felt ready to take on a new challenge for both himself and his family.

Newcastle's club statement wished Guimaraes and his family well for the future. The midfielder left the club's pre-season training camp in La Manga, Spain, earlier this week once talks reached a breakthrough, allowing the move to Emirates Stadium to be finalised.

Welcome from new team-mates

Guimaraes said he had already received messages from several of his new team-mates, including fellow Brazilian Gabriel and midfielder Declan Rice, who welcomed him with a lighthearted request for no more on-pitch clashes now that they are on the same side. He said he felt he had reached a stage in his career where he needed this kind of challenge, adding that he wants to win trophies and make history at his new club.

Guimaraes joined Newcastle in January 2022 when the club was fighting relegation, and became central to their turnaround under then-head coach Eddie Howe. He made history as the first Newcastle captain in seven decades to lift a major domestic trophy, after the club beat Liverpool in the 2025 EFL Cup final. He also helped Newcastle qualify for the Champions League in 2023 and 2025, before the club finished 12th in the Premier League last season.
