Apple Watch battery replacement: what it costs and when it makes sense
Apple Watch batteries wear down over time, but replacing one typically costs around $99 and can be cheaper than buying a new device. Whether it's worth it depends on the watch's age and software support.
Like all lithium-ion batteries, an Apple Watch battery gradually loses capacity, leading to faster drain and more frequent charging. Rather than discarding the device, owners can often have the battery replaced instead.
What replacement costs
Apple offers battery replacement directly for a flat fee, typically $99. Authorized providers such as Best Buy offer the same service for the same price. The process usually takes about a week and can be scheduled online or in store.
An active AppleCare plan covers battery issues once capacity drops below 80%, but not normal wear from everyday use. A recurring AppleCare subscription is also available, though it likewise excludes typical battery degradation from coverage.
For more confident users, iFixit sells replacement batteries for the original and Series 1 models along with detailed repair guides, though batteries for newer models must be sourced elsewhere. This DIY route carries real risk and isn't recommended for everyone.
Repair or upgrade?
Software support is the key consideration. The newest watchOS 27 only supports the Apple Watch Series 9, SE 3, Ultra 2 and newer. The previous version, watchOS 26, supported models back to the Series 6 and second-generation SE. That leaves the Series 5 and first-generation SE without software updates since their support ended in September 2024, though these older devices still function normally.
iPhone compatibility is generally not an issue, since older watchOS versions work fine with current iOS versions — though the newest Apple Watch models require a sufficiently recent iPhone and iOS release.
Because Apple Watches don't retain resale value as well as other Apple products, a battery replacement may not pay for itself if the watch is later sold. As a general guide, replacing the battery makes sense for a Series 6 or 7 and newer models, while watches older than roughly five years are usually better off being upgraded rather than repaired.
