Apple, the US consumer electronics company, announced on Tuesday that its first smart display, the HomeView, will go on sale on November 13th. Shoppers can already order it at Amazon for $289.99, a $10 discount. The offer covers the gray and the cream-white "starlight" colors. Tech site The Verge notes that discounts on new Apple devices before launch are rare.

What the device does

The Verge's Jennifer Pattison Tuohy spent a short time with the display and compared it to an "iPhone for your home" that looks like an oversized Apple Watch. The HomeView has a seven-inch square touchscreen. It can recognize up to six household members and automatically switch between personalized views, showing information relevant to whoever is using it.

The HomeView also works as a smart home hub, with support for Matter and Thread. It can control compatible smart home devices and show live feeds and recordings from HomeKit Secure Video cameras. It has a 12-megapixel FaceTime camera for video calls and can also play music and display photos.

Siri with artificial intelligence

A major part of the experience is Apple's AI-powered Siri assistant. It answers questions using personal context from the user's messages, calendar and emails. For example, it can be asked to find lost keys, play a song someone sent by text, pull up a recipe with step-by-step instructions and built-in timers, or help track a schedule without picking up a phone.

The Verge says a full review of the HomeView will follow in November.
