Analog vs. digital TV: how broadcast technology has evolved
With streaming now surpassing traditional broadcast and cable viewing in the US, the television industry is bracing for another shift — the move to NextGen TV, echoing the analog-to-digital transition of nearly two decades ago.

Television continues to evolve rapidly. In April 2026, Nielsen found that streaming accounted for roughly 47.6% of US viewing, more than double the combined share of broadcast and cable. Still, about a fifth of American households rely on free over-the-air broadcasts, whose underlying technology has advanced significantly since the analog era.
Analog television rose to popularity after World War II, transmitting video and audio via very high and ultra high frequency channels picked up by antennas. Households later moved to analog cable, and the format remained dominant for roughly six decades until the FCC mandated a full switch to digital broadcasting in 2009 — meaning analog TV outlasted the arrival of the smartphone.
The core difference
Analog signals are continuous, while digital broadcasts convert images and sound into binary code, compressed into data packets sent over radio waves, cables, or the internet. Digital technology enables sharper pictures, more efficient use of bandwidth, more channels per frequency, high-definition video, and wider aspect ratios.
Congress set the digital transition in motion in 1996, with all full-power stations required to broadcast digitally by 2009. According to Nielsen Media Research, about 97.5% of American households were ready for that switch by the deadline.
A new transition looms
Now the FCC is pushing ATSC 3.0, or NextGen TV, which adds internet protocols to broadcasting and promises 4K resolution, better audio and more channels. Unlike the earlier transition, this one lacks a congressionally mandated timeline or government-funded support for consumers. Advocates warn that a rushed shift, potentially paired with encrypted signals, could cut millions of people off from free broadcasts, including emergency alerts and public service announcements.
