Germany's AfD says it is preparing Russia-US-Germany forum on reviving Nord Stream
Germany's far-right AfD party says it is preparing a 2027 forum with Russia and the United States to discuss reviving the Nord Stream gas pipeline.
Markus Frohnmaier, deputy leader of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) faction in the Bundestag, has said his party is preparing a business forum involving Germany, Russia and the United States, planned for 2027.
Speaking to Russian outlet Izvestia, Frohnmaier said the AfD maintains contact with Kirill Dmitriev, a special representative of the Russian leadership, regarding organization of the event. He added that details about the venue would be released later.
Nord Stream on the agenda
Frohnmaier said the AfD intends to raise the topic of reviving the Nord Stream pipeline and economic cooperation with Russia at the forum. Dmitriev had earlier said Russia was ready to hold such an event in 2027, while US officials have not yet commented on possible participation.
Reuters previously reported that Dmitriev, Putin's chief economic envoy, and AfD leadership had already begun preparing for a meeting next year to discuss restoring Russian gas supplies to Germany.
Germany's Greens and the ruling Christian Democratic Union have sharply criticized the AfD leadership's reported plans to consult with a Kremlin adviser on resuming Russian gas deliveries. In a June interview with Reuters, AfD co-leader Alice Weidel called for ending the boycott of Russian oil and gas to support Germany's weak economy. Her comments followed an early-June visit to Russia by Frohnmaier, an influential AfD lawmaker, who met Gazprom head Alexei Miller and called for restarting the Nord Stream pipeline.
