12 minor girls married in Latvia last year
According to Latvia's Central Statistical Bureau, 12 underage girls entered into marriage last year, while no minor boys did so.
Data compiled by Latvia's Central Statistical Bureau shows that 12 underage girls got married last year. No boys under the age of majority were recorded among those who married.
In total, 10,457 marriages were registered in the country last year, which is 252 more than in the previous year.
Second consecutive year of increase
Compared with earlier periods, the number of underage brides has edged up slightly in recent years. In 2024, nine minor girls got married, while back in 2010 the figure stood at 28. This suggests that, compared with more than a decade ago, the overall number of underage marriages has declined, though a slight increase has been observed over the past two years.
Number of children in Latvia
The Central Statistical Bureau also reports that at the start of this year, 334,000 children under the age of 17 were living in Latvia, accounting for 18.5% of the country's total population.
