Sweden's one-of-a-kind underwater hotel put up for sale

After 26 years in operation, the creator of "Utter Inn" – a floating cottage near Västerås with a bedroom submerged beneath Lake Mälaren – has decided to sell the unique property.

From the outside, it looks like an ordinary small red Swedish cottage floating on a pontoon. Its real distinction, however, lies underwater: a bedroom for two built roughly three metres below the surface of Lake Mälaren, with windows offering views of fish swimming past.

Artist Mikael Genberg created "Utter Inn" in the summer of 2000 as a combination of art installation and guesthouse. Located about a kilometre from shore near the city of Västerås, the floating cabin has drawn visitors from many countries who travelled by boat to spend a night beneath the lake's surface.

According to the Swedish publication Fastighetsvärlden, the hotel no longer hosts guests in 2026. It has been pulled ashore and requires maintenance before it can be used again. With no other viable plan for keeping the project running, Genberg decided to put it up for sale.

The new owner would not be required to keep "Utter Inn" on Lake Mälaren. Genberg has suggested the cabin could instead end up in the Swedish archipelago, a Norwegian fjord, or elsewhere in the world. He says he hopes whoever buys it will see an opportunity to begin a new chapter for the unusual structure.

Neither Fastighetsvärlden nor Genberg has disclosed the asking price. It is known, however, that a night's stay for two adults recently cost around 310 euros.
