Youthful Northern Ireland stun Ukraine 3-0 in Nations League
Northern Ireland's football team, fielding its youngest starting line-up since World War Two, secured a commanding 3-0 win over Ukraine in the Nations League. The result boosts their hopes of topping the group and securing promotion.

Northern Ireland delivered a commanding 3-0 victory over Ukraine in a Nations League match in Trnava, Slovakia on Friday night. Manager Michael O'Neill fielded a starting team with an average age of just 22, the youngest Northern Ireland line-up on record since World War Two.
Oxford defender Ciaron Brown, the only starter over 25, opened the scoring in the ninth minute following a knockdown from Ruairi McConville. Nineteen-year-old Kieran Morrison, making his first start, then set up Isaac Price to double the lead, before Brown added a second goal of his own later in the match.
Defence stands out
The back line was a particular highlight, delivering a third consecutive clean sheet. Brodie Spencer and Terry Devlin filled the full-back roles, while McConville and 20-year-old Tom Atcheson, who plays for Blackburn Rovers in the Championship, anchored the centre of defence.
O'Neill praised both young defenders, saying they have "no ceiling" despite currently playing in the Championship. Brown, who plays in League One, stepped into a senior leadership role in the absence of injured Sunderland defender Dan Ballard.
Standings implications
The win carries significant weight for Northern Ireland's group standing — finishing top would secure promotion to League A for the first time and offer a more favourable path toward Euro 2028 qualification. It marked the team's biggest away win in five years. The current run of matches concludes with a final game on Monday.
