Northern Ireland's young guns stun Ukraine in UEFA Nations League
Northern Ireland fielded their youngest starting line-up since World War Two and beat Ukraine 3-0 in the UEFA Nations League, moving closer to promotion to League A.

Convincing win in Trnava
Northern Ireland beat Ukraine 3-0 in a UEFA Nations League fixture played in Trnava, Slovakia, on Friday night, BBC Sport reports. Ciaron Brown opened the scoring in the 9th minute after a knockdown from Ruairi McConville, then added a second late in the game when the ball crossed the line past goalkeeper Dmytro Riznyk in unusual circumstances. Isaac Price scored the third after a cross from 19-year-old debutant Kieran Morrison.
Youngest line-up since the war
Manager Michael O'Neill's starting XI had an average age of just 22 — the youngest Northern Ireland side on record since World War Two. Brown, 28, who plays in England's third tier (League One), was the only starter over 25 and stepped into a senior leadership role in the absence of injured Sunderland defender Dan Ballard. O'Neill said Brown "brings a lot to the team" and is "a better player" than his current level suggests.
Two young defenders also stood out: 20-year-old debutant Tom Atcheson (Blackburn Rovers) and 21-year-old Norwich City player Ruairi McConville, both currently playing in England's Championship. O'Neill described the pair as having "no ceiling" and said they are "ready to go to the next level," while acknowledging they will still make mistakes given the physical demands placed on them.
Context and stakes
The result was Northern Ireland's third consecutive clean sheet and their biggest away win in five years. Before this campaign, the team had never won an away match in the Nations League, until Shea Charles scored a 99th-minute winner against Georgia. According to BBC Sport, only Sweden and France have beaten Ukraine in the past 12 months — Northern Ireland can now be added to that list.
The report also recalls Northern Ireland's famous 2-0 win over Ukraine at Euro 2016 in Lyon, though O'Neill had deliberately kept the team's focus on the present rather than that history.
If Northern Ireland remain unbeaten through this four-match international window, they will head into November's final two fixtures with momentum. Topping the group would secure promotion to League A for the first time and place them in a five-team group for Euro 2028 qualifying. Isaac Price, 23, who scored his first international goal in over a year, said the squad enjoys a strong sense of togetherness and is focused on building on this momentum.
