Romania's only nuclear power plant has been taken offline after water flow in the Danube River fell below the level required for the facility to operate safely. Authorities had reportedly attempted to prevent a complete shutdown, but the drop in river flow ultimately made continued operation untenable.
A significant loss of capacity
The plant plays a major role in the country's power supply, typically generating around a fifth of Romania's total electricity output. The loss of this capacity represents a substantial gap in the national energy balance and could put pressure on electricity supply stability.
Why river flow matters
Nuclear plants rely on large volumes of water for cooling purposes, and when a river's flow drops below a critical threshold, safe operation can no longer be maintained.
