Russian guided aerial bombs struck residential buildings in the southern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia on Saturday, 10 October. According to Ukrainian officials, at least 17 people were killed, including three children, and at least 18 were injured. The strikes come as Russia escalates its attacks across Ukraine, killing more than 60 people in four days.

Rescue efforts

Emergency crews searched damaged apartments, cleared rubble and helped survivors get out while smoke rose over the city. Cars were left twisted in the streets and homes were heavily damaged. Ambulances carried the wounded to hospital.

Kyiv strikes and political backdrop

Missiles also hit the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, on Saturday. The city's mayor said four people were injured.

The attacks followed an announcement by US President Donald Trump of a deal to buy Russian diesel. Kyiv warned that this could help finance Moscow's war. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused Russia of exploiting any easing of economic pressure to keep up its attacks.

More than four years after the start of the full-scale invasion, the two countries remain locked in a prolonged conflict, with little movement along the front line.
