YouTube to change how it counts views, boosting the numbers

Starting August 24th, YouTube will count a view as soon as a video begins playing, matching the approach used by Instagram and TikTok. The change won't affect creator earnings or Partner Program eligibility.

YouTube has announced a change to how it counts video views. Beginning August 24th, a view will be registered the moment a video starts playing, rather than after a certain amount of watch time as before.

According to the platform, this means creators will likely see their total view counts climb faster going forward. The new approach mirrors the method already used by Instagram and TikTok, where a view is added as soon as a video starts or replays. By contrast, X counts a view only after a user has watched for at least two seconds. YouTube already applied this same counting method to its Shorts videos last year.

Old system remains as a separate metric

It isn't entirely clear how YouTube previously counted views on standard videos, though it has generally been understood that a viewer needed to watch around 30 seconds for it to register. The platform isn't scrapping that older method entirely — it will remain available in the Analytics dashboard under a metric called "engaged views."

YouTube says the update won't affect creators' earnings or their eligibility for the YouTube Partner Program (YPP). This is just one of several recent creator-focused changes from the platform, which is also set to raise the requirements for joining the YPP starting next year.

In its announcement, YouTube explained that it has historically used multiple, inconsistent view-counting systems across different video formats, which led to confusion among creators. The company said it hopes that bringing metric parity across all formats will give creators a clearer picture of their overall reach.
